Certaldo

Certaldo

Certaldo is an Italian municipality in Tuscany, located in the province of Florence. Located in the Val d’Elsa, near San Gimignano, it is a fascinating place from a historical and cultural point of view. The history of Certaldo is linked to the Alberti Counts family, who controlled the entire area in the Middle Ages. Certaldo Alto is the ancient fortified village, located on the hill of the city, which still preserves its medieval structure today. The walls of Certaldo Alto are about a mile and a half long and are integrated with watchtowers. The historic center of Certaldo Alto is a maze of streets and alleys, with stone walls and red brick, imposing tower houses, and charming views. Both are important historical and cultural monuments of the city. Here you can also find the Collegiate Church of San Tommaso and the Pretorio Palace. The historic center of Certaldo Basso, on the other hand, is characterized by Renaissance-style buildings. Certaldo Basso, on the other hand, is the modern center of the city and is dominated by the church of San Michele Arcangelo. Born in the mid-14th century, Boccaccio is one of the greatest Italian writers of all time. Certaldo is also famous for being the birthplace of Giovanni Boccaccio, the famous author of the Decameron. The museum displays manuscripts and incunabula that testify to the literary importance of the author. The Pretorio Palace houses the “Giovanni Boccaccio” Civic Museum. During the festival, the streets of the historic center come alive with street artists from around the world. During the summer, Certaldo hosts Mercantia, a street theater festival that attracts spectators from all over Tuscany. Visitors can taste the best wines of the region accompanied by typical Tuscan dishes. In addition, every year on the first weekend of September, the Enoloche Fair takes place, an event that celebrates local wines and Tuscan gastronomy. If you are planning a trip to Tuscany, do not forget to visit Certaldo.
